I've heard this question myself a few times, typically dodging it because I really don't know how to answer it. Now Mike Jones, responsible (among other things) at Microsoft for identity partnerships and getting CardSpace adopted, responds in this post.

Recommended reading for anybody interested in Microsoft's views on CardSpace, OpenID, their adoption and how they relate.
