Identity: What Are the Questions?

For next week's Internet Identity Workshop, Kaliya and I would love your help in answering the following questions:

Thinking back to the first Identity Gang meetings 3 years ago and the first IIW 2 years ago in Berkeley, IIW a year ago...

What are the questions about interoperable, internet-scale identity that we are no longer asking ourselves?

  • maybe we figured out the answer,
  • maybe we figured out we couldn't answer it,
  • maybe we figured out it was a question we asked to soon and will surface again.

What are the questions we are asking ourselves now?

What will the questions be about 6-18 months from now?

We want to know what you think. Please answer this on your blog and let us know or fill out this survey. We would like to have answers by Friday morning if at all possible.

Speaking for myself, some answers might be:

  • Question we asked in the past: "would anybody think internet-scale identity is useful?" That question has been answered with Yes, Definitely.
  • One of the current questions is: "How do identity providers make money?" The answer is very much still in the air.
  • 12 months from now, we might ask: "how do we seamlessly aggregate claims from multiple identity sources?"

This will be discussed Monday afternoon at 4pm. Ideally we can put answers together in a manner that reflects where progress was made and where not, where we have urgent need to advance our understanding and where it's "merely" a question of execution. And please do provide your input, regardless of whether you are coming to IIW or not!
