The European Union seems to be funding a multi-year research project, starting this month and called Akogrimo, to build a "mobile next-generation knowledge grid".

There is fairly little information on-line at this time, but it sounds interesting in spite of the many buzzwords that they use without providing any explanation how they are supposed to interact. Participants include a number of universities throughout Europe, some service providers and some telcos.
