Papadopoulos' Definition of Grid Computing

As quoted in the Java Developer's Journal (June 2004 issue, page 6), Sun's CTO Greg Papadopoulos defines grid computing as:

"the decoupling of applications from specific hardware platforms"

So according to this, the idea is to create applications independently of the specific hardware platform (and structure, one might add, such as how many processors it has?), and grid computing would then "do the right thing" without the application having to know what that right thing is.

Applying this view of the world to Situational Computing, the Situational Information Grid could thus be defined as "the decoupling of information from specific applications that manage it".

That's probably not too far off the mark.
