Theo Kanter, at Ericsson Research in Sweden writes about what he calls
"ambient awareness" (we would call it situational awareness) in
his article titled Cooperative
Mobile Ambient Awareness.
Interestingly, he points out the need for a
... context ontology and a model of observed entities in the
communication environment along with entity profiles and relations between
those entities. This model has a dual purpose of being descriptive (enabling
the entity to tell other entities what it knows about its environment) but also
interpretable (enabling the entity to respond intelligently to context events
that it may receive).
I agree: semantics (and ontologies as a way of capturing them) are very
advantageous for situational software.
